International Boxing Challenges

2018 – 2019 Has been an exciting time for the Eddie Melo Legacy Organization. We have recieved numerous invitations to have our fighters compete in the internation arena. One of our first events took place in late December of 2018 on the island of Puerto Rico. Triston Brookes and Johnny Said both emerged victorious in the 1st Vieques International Invitational Amateur Boxing Show. From there we moved on to the Algarve Portimão Box Cup where our boxers won 7 out of the 8 fights, achieving and overall status of 2nd place out of 10 countries and 25 teams. The Team consisted of Canadian Amateur Boxers Deedra Chestnut (60 kgs), Spencer Wilcox (60 kgs), Johnny Said (64 kgs) and Triston Brookes (75 kgs). 

For the first time in Canadian history, The Eddie Melo Legacy Organization was able to have their boxers compete in the Elite tournament, one of the biggest in Europe,The Haringey cup.  Four of our boxers competed and Spencer Wilcox was the first Canadian to win in his respective weight category. In 2019 a team of five EMLO boxers were sponsored by The WBC and the President of the WBC Mauricio Sulaiman and the Chair of WBC Cares Jill Diamond to attend a training camp in Mexico City at the CNAR Conade. The team consisted of Johnny Said, John-Michael Bianco, Deedra Chestnut, Triston Brookes and Justin Parinas. 

Joey Melo and Roger Dutra travelled to Havana, Cuba to visit the infamous Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym where most of Cuba’s Gold Medalists and International Amateur Boxers were groomed. While there EMLO had the opportunity of speaking with the Director of the Rafael Trejo Boxing Gym and handing out EMLO gifts
