Algarve Portimão Box Cup

The Eddie Melo Legacy Organization (EMLO) participated in the 2019 Algarve Portimão Box Cup in Portimão, Portugal, March 29 – March 31, 2019, which consisted of 10 countries and 25 teams, coming in at a close 2nd place, behind Team Switzerland.  Countries represented were; Portugal, Spain, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Angola and Cape Verde.

EMLO’s team consisted of Canadian Amateur Boxers Deedra Chestnut (60 kgs), Spencer Wilcox (60 kgs), Johnny Said (64 kgs) and Triston Brookes (75 kgs), with Head Coach Tony Wallace and EMLO’s Co-Founder Joey Melo and EMLO’s Executive Director Eddie Montalvo, and one of EMLO’s sponsors, Roger Dutra (Dutra Landscaping).

The Team travelled to Portugal on March 27, 2019, and were met with a warm reception by The Algarve Portimão Box Cup Executive Director Sandra Silva and her Staff. The team stayed for 2 days at the beautiful port city of Quarteira before heading to Portimão for the tournament.

In Portimão, Team EMLO went right to work; networking, training and meeting lots of people.

After the quarter-finals and semi-finals March 29 & March 30, Team EMLO was just 3 points shy of winning the Team Category of the Algarve Portimão Box Cup.

On March 31, day of finals competition, Deedra, Spencer and Triston each won their finals bout winning the 2019 Algarve Portimão Box Cup in their respective divisions while Johnny Said, although a finalist, came in at a close 2nd behind his Switzerland opponent in a tough fought finals bout.

Switzerland had a total of 8 boxers which most likely played a role in their winning the 2019 Algarve Portimão Box Cup Team Trophy but overall it was an amazing event.

We at EMLO are very proud of Deedra, Spencer, Johnny and Triston for how they represented themselves, EMLO and Canada.

The experience was one that will last a lifetime. Many friendships were established and we seek to return to Portugal next year to participate in the 2020 Algarve Portimão Box Cup.

A huge “Thank You” to the Algarve Portimão Box Cup Executive Director Sandra Silva and her staff including the Algarve Sports Authority and the people of Algarve.
