The Eddie Melo Legacy Organization (EMLO) is a registered Canadian Non- Profit organization which was established to focus and reach out, and support underprivileged youth, who may otherwise not have, the necessary support. The purpose is to help them grow and thrive in a positive way, within their environment. EMLO supports underprivileged youth, amateur boxers, including, but not limited to children who have been affected by a homicide. EMLO is dedicated to providing them with athletic, educational, fine art, employment as well as social, emotional and psychological support systems, regardless of their demographics.
The Eddie Melo Legacy Organization was founded by both myself ( Jessica Melo – Eddie Melo’s daughter) and Joseph Melo (Eddie Melo’s Brother) in 2017,in honour and in memory of my late father Eddie “ the Hurricane” Melo, Canadian middleweight and light heavyweight champion, who was tragically murdered on April 6 2001. I was a teenager when my father was murdered, I did not have any access to programs like what EMLO now provides for at risk youth and children who have lost a parent to a homicide. Having such support is crucial to provide the means so that a child/youth can experience a positive future. EMLO is about ensuring young at risk youth and amateur boxers experience positive influence and sociability, while keeping them off the streets and safe in a boxing gym. Not only boxers, but any youth in crisis to help lessen the burden and give them support they would not have otherwise.
Our events draw people from all walks of life, including athletes, business people, celebrities and politicians. Networking and socializing has benefitted many of our sponsors and attendees. Our mandate with each event is to bring more people together to support our youth. This Fall 2019 we will be hosting our second annual Eddie Melo Legacy Organization Invitational boxing show on Saturday Sept 28 2019 at The Canadian National Exhibition where CANADA and the USA will meet in a friendly match up. The Canadian team leader is former Olympian, Egerton Marcus and Team USA’s team leader (who is an EMLO mentor) is John “The Iceman” Scully. Last years’ inaugural event brought out the likes of numerous former world champions such as, “Poison” Junior Jones, George Chuvalo, Nicky Furlano, Billy “TheKid” Irwin as well as community leaders, businesspeople and mentors, all from diverse areas of life.
